can I use external player?

Subject: can I use external player?
I have had frequent issues with the mythtv video player crashing or freezing etc..
Lately I have been using the "classic media player", with tapeworm, but I'm planing to move to the Storage Groups feature in mythtv and I don't think that will work with that.
Could you leverage off the classic player as it seems pretty good at ffw/rew etc...
Not sure if you can stream directly to s/w or just pass it a "samba share" or file location.
