Subject: Seeking not working
Hi I am using Ubuntu with the 0.21.0+fixes16838-0ubuntu3.1 MythTV package for my backend.  When MythTV Player starts up it complains that the backend is using protocol version 40 but that MythTV Player only speaks 18-36.  I edited the config file to allow newer protocols and now it loads fine.

My problem is that seeking seems to be messed up.  I can seek the recording just fine on my linux mythfrontend but whenever I try to seek on MythTV player it only seeks forwards and by unpredictable amounts.  Even if I try to seek backwards it still goes forwards.  Sometimes it will jump by as much as 10-20 minutes when I only tried to do a short 5-10s forward seek.

Does anyone have a similar problem?  Is this occuring because my version of MythTV is too new?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I upgraded to 0.4.2 to match my MythTV 0.21 (Knoppmyth 5.5). I cannot seek in files which have complex audio components - it seems that some channels have an AC3 component and an MP3 component. These files won't seek. MythTV player just seems to stall. The display won't respond to keystrokes or even a close-window. The other parts of MythTV player continue to work OK. The program has to be killed by the task manager.

Downgrading to 0.4.1 or trying 0.51pre10 make no difference (with the protocol trick applied).

NUV files work OK, as do MPG files with only an MP3 audio channel - one of our stations (SBS in Australia) is OK.

I have downloaded the source but haven't built it yet. I suspect that a thread is dying but not being caught.

I think I'm having this same problem.  Version 0.4.2, 0.50 and the prerelease .51 all do it.   There are certain shows that work fine, I can watch, fast forward, pause, etc.  Other shows will play for a split second and then stop and I can't watch them at all.  And other shows will play fine unless I try to fast forward or rewind.  Then the player just freezes and I have to kill the application in the task manager.  If I pause on of these shows I can't resume the show unless I quit the player (usually don't have to use the task manager for this) and then restart the player.  If I do this and then start the show it picks up where the show was paused.  It's always the same shows, so I usually know if it's a show I can pause only, or if I basically have to watch it all the way through without skipping ads.  And like I said, some shows just won't play at all.  I used to run Windows 2000 and it did this.  I've updated to Windows XP and it's still doing it.  I know I'm running an older version of mythtv, like version .20 (I think).  I'm scared to upgrade that because I tried before and certain things didn't work right.

2 other things.  These shows play fine on the mythtv backend/frontend box that's hooked to my TV.  I'm using a SiliconDust HDHomerun as my capture "card".  MythTV Player almost always worked flawlessly until I "upgraded" to digitial television (the HDHomerun).

Is there anything I can try to fix this stuff?  It seems hopeless.  I just spent hours installing an ubuntu virtual machine on this windows computer so that I could run a "real" mythfrontend, but the frame rate performance was unacceptably jerky.

Thanks,

Sorry for the *bump*, but I'm also having this issue with 0.6.0_ReleaseCandidate_2 on some HD channels.  Clicking the seek anywhere causes the MythTV video player window to to lock up for about 5 or 10 minutes.  After that time, I get the error "It is not possible to seek in this recording. Sorry. Seeking and commercial skipping has been disabled. If this is a transcoded file, then it is a known issue which will, hopefully, be fixed at some point"..

However, this is not a transcoded file and is simply a direct MPEG stream right from the HD-5500 Tuner card.  Doing PS AUX on the MythTV backend shows that even though the MythTV video player window has frozen, it's still taking about 10% CPU usage and 20% memory usage away from my backend until this error pops up.  After clicking "OK" to the error message, the MythTV Video player goes black and I can no longer quit out of the application.  MythTV Player becomes unresponsive and doing a Ctrl+Alt+Del Force End Task takes another several minutes for MythTV Player to die.. At which point you can start it back up and start playing video again..
