Subject: Feature poll
Thanks for all the positive and constructive feedback!  I am happy that you find the player useful. I created a poll to get an idea of which feature that would improve the player the most.

Cheers,

Mikkel

Thanks for all your hard work so far!  MythTV player gets used all the time in my house, especially by my wife who wants to watch MythTV shows without knowing Linux.

For me, deinterlacing is the most important thing to have updated next.  That would be an immediate upgrade in picture quality that would also benefit LiveTV when it's implemented.  Since I don't hardly ever watch live TV, just recordings, deinterlacing gets my vote.

Thanks!

Deinterlacing is definitely on the top of my list.  A close second is the jitter reduction.  Live TV is low on my list...I'd never use it.

Thanks for a great app!

I just got Mythtv setup this week and Mythtv player was just what I was looking for. Perfect for me to be able to watch on my work laptop. I definitely think the live tv support would be great. That would have to be by far my top request. I also think a nice feature would be if at all possible to access Mythvideos.

Subject: Deinterlazer
Deinterlacers: 'Laurent Piguet' are currently looking at the deinterlacers. He found out that the ffmpeg library actually contains a simple deinterlazer which just takes one line of code to insert, so that will hopefully be released in the not to distant future. Next is looking at "proper" deinterlacers such as the ones from DScaler.

Linux
I actually just compiled it for linux this weekend. A few changes was nescersary but not that much. It seemed to work, but unfortunately it deadlocks very often. I suspect it is due to some issue with Multithreading and SDL, and I do not want to spend to much time on it. I

LiveTv
This one is a bit more vital as it can mess up schedules. I do not want to upset users and get a hateclub. The "problem" is that MythTv Player as a "frontend" has a lot of power over the backend. This means that it is possible to change schedules, to change channel on recorders that are currently recording etc etc.
The backend does not force the usage of recorders to schedules. It gracefully sends events to the frontend that  is using a recorder for livetv telling it that it has to use the tv-tuner in "x min". It is then up to the frontend to release the tuner or tell the backend that the recording should not be scheduled anyway. Also, I am not sure what happens if the player crashes when using a tuner for livetv. I have a feeling that the tuner stays locked on the livetv channel.
All in all many ways to mess up schedules!!!! I have been watching livetv (Very basic!), but I am currently digging in the code for the backend to investigate what all the events from the backend means.
If anybody want to be a "tester" of the livetv feature at some point when I get it up running  just write me...
I am considering NOT enabling LiveTV, even when I implemented it as I do not want to mess up peoples backend. What do you think about this?

I have a Linux Frontend that I had problems with for a while.  It would crash while watching Live TV.  What you described above is exactly what happened to me.  The backend would never take the tuner back from the frontend since it wasn't ever released.  When the Frontend was rebooted, it would tell me that a program was being recorded, but when I went to the recordings menu, no program was listed as being currently recorded.  As you predicted, the tuner would be locked onto that channel and nothing could be recorded.

I could resolve this by restarting mythbackend on the server, but that's not always an ideal solution.

If you need help testing liveTV in MythTVPlayer, I will gladly help out.  I don't mind missing any recording from time to time.

I hope to put more energy into livetv now. I am a bit busy, but It would be really nice to have a LiveTv test-version running to get feedback. Based on ColeSlaw's comment it might be a good idea to have the possibility to "bump" tuners out of livetv mode (If it is possible)

Before that, 0.3.6 should be released, so go to this post and download the test-version. I can't do to much about livetv before the this is released :)

deinterlacer would be a better option in my opinion as the whole point of MythTV is to record TV rather than watch live TV right?

Subject: Play from Mythvideo Database
The ability to play from the Mythvideo database is the top of my wishlist.  I want to use MythTV and your player in a school district, and give teachers the ability to watch videos recorded at the school or district level.  Thanks for all you are doing!

Not sure why people want a linux version when you can easily install mythtv on linux anyway. However I too would appreciate mythvideo integration.

Cheers, program looks good, i will try it at home tonight.

Whilst I can appreciate people wanting to have easy access to MythVideo, this is easily achieved by turning on Samba on your backend. This may not be installed by default on your implementation of MythTV, I can recommend KnoppMyth which includes Samba by default you just need to turn it on.
